Dear Parents

Welcome to all the Monterey Families. We trust that you had an enjoyable holiday and that you are prepared for the excitement and challenges of 2015. The children are settling down well with only a few tearful little ones as they adapt to their new school environment.

We have an open door policy and parents are welcome to speak to their teachers directly or pop in to the office if you have any questions. Please note that I am a teaching Principal and if you would like a meeting with me, contact Glenda Jupp, the School Secretary.

Staff – Our 2015 staff are; Ingrid Losper in the Cub class with her assistant, Nomathemba Baloyi, Leone Barnard – Panda class with Linda Macibela, Adina Duminy – Penguin class with Liesle Blignault, Belinda Robinson – Dolphin class teacher with, Shaakirah Allie, Jemma Phillipson – Hippo class with Chonté Brits and Lorelle Meyer – Elephant class teacher with Lisa Adriaans. Our Aftercare supervisor is Lidia Menezes with Susan Boonzaaier assisting and Rachel Bruintjies will cover for her whilst she is on maternity leave. Aretha Mtwebana is the general assistant. Richard Bruintjies is in charge of school maintenance with the help of Sibu Mgqomo. Cheryl Borchardt is the school Bursar and Glenda Jupp the Secretary.

Traffic and access – We are aware that the roads outside the school are congested in the mornings and at the end of the day. There is a one-way system to make this a little easier. When entering/exiting please observe a safe driving speed. The area close to the Monterey entrance gate is for staff parking only. Extra Murals – This week there has been demo classes for each of the extra mural classes being: Wriggle and Rhyme, Clayplay and Playball. If you would like your child to partake in any of these activities, you will need to complete the form deposited into your child’s pocket after the demonstration and return it to the fees box in the office. If there are any questions please liaise with the extra mural teachers directly.

School and Aftercare fees -The first payment for 2015 was due on 1 January. It is requested that outstanding fees for January are paid as soon as possible. Should the school fees be paid on a termly basis, it needs to be paid before the end of this week. Thank you to all parents who have already paid. The Bursar is available to discuss any problems or queries. Debit orders for children who attended last year need to be updated with a new form and Aftercare Contracts should be completed for children who attend Aftercare. Forms are available from the office. February’s fees are due on Monday 2 Feb.

School GroundsThe school grounds are available to Monterey children for parties on Saturdays only. This can be booked at the office.

Admin forms – Please make sure that all administration forms have been handed in at the office.

Communication – Please read the notices on your child’s classroom notice board and check e-mails for the teacher’s weekly journal. This letter will also be sent by email so if you do not receive it, please check with the office to make sure we have your correct email address. School also communicates with parents via the message pockets. If there are any changes in contact details please inform the Secretary. Journals and newsletters can also be read on the website.

Medicines – We would like to remind all parents that we do not administer non-essential medications. If your child has a medical condition, it needs to be discussed with the teacher. Serious conditions need to be in written format and recorded in the medicine book.

Snack/lunch – When making your child’s snack or lunch for Aftercare, please remember that it has to be something your child likes to eat and it must be healthy – no sweet biscuits/ fizzy drink etc. You will need two separate boxes for snack and lunch if your child is staying for Aftercare.

Aftercare – children need to bring a pillow and a blanket that is taken home every Friday and returned clean on Mondays. Mattress covers are laundered every Friday.

Food for a friend – happens every Friday morning. Monterey supports a community School with fruit and sandwiches donated by our parents and brought to school on Friday mornings. We need a few moms to volunteer to take the food to Constantia Primary School. Please contact Kathy Pieterse (PTA Chairlady) in the Elephant class if you are able to help.

Afternoon Play/lift list – If your child is going on a playdate or being collected by another person, please put the name of the person on the list outside the class.

Laundry List – If you are able to help with the washing of the facecloths that each child has, please put your name on the list outside your child’s classroom.

Eye testing – Elsbeth Wilson 28/29/30 Jan – The Middle and new Older Group children have their eyes tested.

Class Braai’sThe Older Group, Hippo and Elephant class braai will take place this Friday 30 January. Middle Group will braai on 6 February and the Younger Group will meet on

13 February. These evenings are for parents and children to meet for an informal bring and braai and to get to know each other. Check for more details outside your classrooms closer to the time.

AGM/Meet your teacher – Thursday 19 February 19.00Come along at 19.00 for drinks and snacks before the formal proceedings begin promptly at 19.30. By approx. 20.15 parents will move to the classrooms for an informative chat with their teachers.

Ear testing – Ann Carr 23/27 Feb – Middle and new Older group children have their ears tested.

Past Pupils day – Fri 27 February 14.00 – 15.00The past 2014 pupils are invited back to visit us.

Photographs 11 – 13 March – The school photographer will be taking individual and class photographs of all the children. Please ensure your child is present on these days.

Parent/teacher meetings start week 18 MarchParents are invited to meet with their teachers for an informal chat to discuss their child’s progress.

Bike and Trike – Friday 20 March – This is the first event of the year. More details to follow closer to the time.

Last day of term – Wednesday 1 April – School will break at normal time.

The second term starts on Monday 13 April.

Shortly a year planner will be sent to all parents to help with planning your year. Please note that the dates are proposed and are subject to change.

This is going to be a busy term filled with lots of activities and functions which are always well attended. We look forward to seeing everyone at these events. I wish everyone a wonderful 2015 and a great stay at Monterey.
